Basant Kumar: A Visionary Leader and Champion of Progress

Basant Kumar, a name that resonates with resilience, determination, and visionary leadership, exemplifies the spirit of a true patriot. A former bureaucrat, nationalist thinker, prolific writer, and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), his life’s journey reflects unwavering dedication to social progress and national development.

From Humble Beginnings to Administrative Excellence

Born into a lower-middle-class family in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Basant Kumar’s inspiring journey began in the modest surroundings of Mariyahu. Despite financial challenges, his academic brilliance earned him top honors from Mariyahu Degree College. His relentless pursuit of excellence led to his selection into Northern Railways through the Railway Service Commission Examination in 1979.

Simultaneously, he pursued an LLB from Delhi University while preparing for the Civil Services. His efforts culminated in success when he qualified for the civil Service and allied service examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. As a Deputy Secretary in the Government of India, his administrative acumen and commitment to public service stood out.

A pivotal encounter with BJP stalwart Shri Arun Jaitley inspired him to pursue a more direct role in nation-building. Motivated by this vision, he took voluntary retirement, a bold step reflecting his courage and deep-rooted conviction.

A Political Journey Driven by Service

Basant Kumar’s entry into politics was fueled by a desire to address the socio-economic challenges of his native Jaunpur. Concerned by the migration of local youth to metropolitan cities for employment, he envisioned a region brimming with opportunities.

However, his political path was fraught with challenges. Despite his administrative expertise, he was denied a Lok Sabha ticket. Undeterred, he demonstrated exceptional leadership during Shri Lal Krishna Advani’s Jan Swabhiman Yatra in 2011 and played a pivotal role in supporting Shri Kalraj Mishra in the 2012 and 2014 elections. His dedication earned him a position as an advisor in the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Concurrently, as General Secretary of the NGO Ek Pahal, he spearheaded initiatives supporting underprivileged communities, Dalits, and school dropouts, underscoring his enduring commitment to social welfare.

Advocating National Reforms

Basant Kumar’s intellectual foresight was evident in his advocacy for electoral reform. His article published on December 18, 2014, in Veer Arjun highlighted the inefficiencies caused by the continuous election cycle and the administrative delays it triggered. His arguments, echoing the sentiments of leaders like Shri Lal Krishna Advani and Dr. Manmohan Singh, gained renewed significance when the Cabinet approved the "One Nation, One Election" bill, fulfilling a decade-long vision.

An Intellectual Powerhouse

Basant Kumar’s writings reflect his profound grasp of nationalism, philosophy, and youth empowerment. His acclaimed works include

1. Rashtra Vadi Karma Yogi,

2. Hindutva Ek Jeevan Shaili,

3. Ekatma Manav Vad Bhajapa ka Sankalp,

4. Yuvao ke Prerana Shrot (Swami Vivekanand),

inaugurated by political luminaries like Shri Lal Krishna Advani, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, and Yogi Adityanath.

Even a life-altering accident in 2020, which resulted in the loss of his left leg, could not dim his indomitable spirit. Inspired by Dr. Gopal Krishna of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he authored Ambedkar Aur Rashtravad, challenging misconceptions about Dalit-Muslim alliances. Its success prompted an English version, Ambedkar and Nationalism, further cementing his status as a thought leader.

A Legacy of Vision and Social Impact

Basant Kumar’s collaboration with Padma Vibhushan Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, was another milestone in his illustrious career. Together, they envisioned a research center dedicated to exploring the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar toward social justice. Though Dr. Pathak’s untimely passing in 2022 left this dream incomplete, Basant Kumar continued the mission with the publication of Ambedkar ke Sapno ka Bharat, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s implementation of Dr. Ambedkar’s economic philosophies.

A Call to Action

Despite his vast experience, intellectual depth, and relentless dedication, Basant Kumar’s potential remains underutilized. His vision for a self-reliant India, founded on social justice and economic inclusivity, aligns seamlessly with the nation’s developmental goals. As India strides toward becoming a global powerhouse, leaders like Basant Kumar, with unparalleled expertise and an unwavering sense of purpose, must be empowered to drive meaningful change.

Basant Kumar’s life is a beacon of inspiration, reflecting the strength of character, commitment to service, and a relentless drive for progress. His contributions deserve recognition and continued support in building a prosperous and equitable India.
