Her grandmothers, too, were educated for their time, and her mother and aunts broke societal norms by pursuing higher education and careers in an era when women were often confined to their homes.

This emphasis on education left an indelible mark on Rashmi Bajpai. From a young age, she was studious and hardworking, understanding the value of balancing academics with practical life skills. Despite financial hardships, her family ensured she received the best education possible. She witnessed her mother pursuing a B.Ed. degree after marriage, a bold move that inspired Rashmi Bajpai to dream big and work hard.

Early Struggles and Resilience

Rashmi Bajpai’s life took a tragic turn when she lost both her parents within six weeks, just as she was about to turn 22. However, her determination and the strong foundation of education she had received helped her navigate this difficult phase. By then, she had already cleared the examination for a Direct Recruit Officer position at The Oriental Insurance Company Limited, a leading non-life general insurance company. She joined the company on April 20, 1987, and this government job became her anchor during the storm.

Balancing Work, Education, and Life

Rashmi Bajpai’s journey was not without challenges. While working full-time, she pursued her graduation through the Non-Collegiate mode of Delhi University. Later, she enrolled in the Company Secretary (CS) course but had to put her studies on hold due to personal challenges. However, Rashmi Bajpai’s perseverance knew no bounds. After an eight-year gap, at the age of 35, she not only completed her CS course but also earned the Fellowship of the Insurance Institute of India. In 2007, she made history by becoming the first female and youngest Company Secretary in the history of The Oriental Insurance Company Limited.

A Legacy of Leadership

With over 43 years of experience in the financial services industry, Rashmi Bajpai Bajpai is a seasoned leader with expertise in board-related matters, corporate governance, finance, reinsurance, investments, and more. Her contributions to the insurance industry have been monumental. In 2024, she was elevated to the position of Executive Director on the Board of The Oriental Insurance Company Limited, another first for a woman in the company’s history. She also served as a Director on the Board of the Industrial Credit Company Limited.

Retirement and Beyond

As Rashmi Bajpai approaches her retirement on March 31, 2025, she is far from hanging up her boots. Passionate about her work as a Company Secretary, she plans to launch her own establishment, continuing to inspire and mentor the next generation of professionals. Her story is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to pursuing one’s dreams.
