Apple Launches Feature to Share Luggage Locations Directly with Airlines

Apple has unveiled a new "Share Item Location" feature designed to assist users in tracking and recovering misplaced items, especially during travel. Available on iPhones running iOS 18.2 public beta, the feature will soon roll out as a free update for iPhone Xs and newer models.

This innovative tool allows users to share the location of their AirTags or other Find My network accessories with third parties, such as airlines, making it easier to recover lost luggage and other belongings. By sharing real-time location data, users can collaborate with those who can assist in locating their items.

How "Share Item Location" Works

The feature simplifies item recovery through a secure link generated in the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Here's how it functions:

  1. Open the Find My App: Access the app and select the misplaced item (e.g., an AirTag or Find My accessory).
  2. Generate a Link: Tap on "Share Location" to create a shareable link.
  3. Send the Link: Share the link with a third party, such as an airline customer service representative.
  4. Track the Item: The recipient can view the item’s live location on an interactive map, which updates as the item moves and displays the last recorded update time.
  5. Deactivate Sharing: Once the item is found, the link is automatically deactivated, and users can stop sharing the location at any time.

Benefits for Travellers

This feature is particularly beneficial for travellers dealing with lost or delayed luggage. Apple has partnered with more than 15 major airlines, including Delta, United, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines, to integrate this functionality into baggage recovery processes. By the end of 2024, additional airlines are expected to adopt the feature to enhance passenger convenience and streamline luggage tracking.

Enhanced Privacy and Security

Apple ensures the "Share Item Location" feature adheres to strict privacy protocols, including end-to-end encryption. This guarantees that only authorized individuals, such as airline representatives, can view the item's location, providing users with peace of mind while safeguarding personal data.

Integration with SITA WorldTracer

To further improve baggage management, the feature will be incorporated into the SITA WorldTracer system, utilized by over 500 airlines worldwide. This integration aims to simplify the recovery process, making it more efficient and secure for both airlines and passengers.

With its focus on security, convenience, and collaboration, Apple’s "Share Item Location" feature is poised to revolutionize how users track and recover lost items, particularly in the travel sector.
