Google is shifting its Gemini service from the main Google app to a standalone app for iOS users. iPhone and iPad users are now encouraged to download the new Gemini app to access its full range of features. Previously, Gemini was accessible through the Google app, allowing users to switch between Google Search and Gemini. However, as Google expanded Gemini’s capabilities—such as introducing Gemini Live—these updates were not integrated into the Google app. Instead, the company focused on developing a dedicated Gemini app, which launched in November.
Now, Google
is officially phasing out Gemini support in the Google app. Users are being
notified via email that Gemini is "no longer available" within the
Google app and that the standalone Gemini app is the "best place to use
Gemini" moving forward. According to a report by 9to5Google, the
email directs users to download the new Gemini app from the App Store to
continue enjoying all its features, including those that were previously
unavailable in the Google app.
Earlier this
month, Google removed the switcher feature that allowed users to toggle between
Google Search and Gemini. While users could still access Gemini through the
"More" tab in the Google app (version v356.0) on iOS, a pop-up now
prompts them to download the full Gemini app from the App Store to maintain
access to the service. This transition is part of Google’s broader strategy to
consolidate the Gemini experience, ensuring that all features and updates are
available in one dedicated app.
By moving
Gemini to a standalone app, Google aims to provide a more streamlined and
feature-rich experience for iOS users. The change underscores the company’s
commitment to enhancing Gemini’s functionality and ensuring users have access
to the latest innovations in a single, optimized platform.
