Yashasvi Jaiswal Becomes the First Indian to Score 1,000 Test Runs in 2024

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the 22-year-old batting prodigy, has etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first Indian to surpass 1,000 Test runs in 2024. In doing so, he broke the long-standing record set by Dilip Vengsarkar, who reached the milestone at the age of 23 in 1979. With three more Tests remaining this year, Jaiswal has the opportunity to rewrite even more records held by Indian cricket legends.

Jaiswal’s stellar performance places him second in the global Test rankings for 2024, just behind England’s Joe Root. To date, he has accumulated 1,007 runs in 10 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 59.23. His tally includes two centuries and six half-centuries, making him one of the standout performers in the longest format this year. Root leads the charts with 1,305 runs in 14 matches.

In India’s cricketing annals, Jaiswal now stands among greats. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most Test runs by an Indian in a single calendar year, scoring 1,562 runs in 2010. Among openers, Virender Sehwag’s 1,462 runs in 2008 remain the benchmark. However, with three matches still to play, Jaiswal has a chance to challenge these records.

Who is Yashasvi Jaiswal?

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his international debut in 2023 against the West Indies, continuing the momentum he built during the 2020 IPL, which brought him into the spotlight. Known for his consistency across formats, Jaiswal already holds several records. He became the youngest player to score a double century in List A cricket and is also the third-youngest to achieve consecutive double centuries in Test cricket.

A technically sound batsman, Jaiswal emphasizes adapting his technique to suit different formats. Off the field, his success has translated into financial achievements as well. As of 2024, his net worth stands at INR 12 crore, and he earned INR 4 crore in the 2022 IPL.

Jaiswal’s rise has been nothing short of spectacular, and his journey seems poised for even greater heights.
