BCCI Sets
Strict Deadline for Shami to Prove Fitness Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy Mohammed
Shami, who recently made his return to competitive cricket after an injury
break, had a strong performance in his first Ranji Trophy match with Bengal. To
prove his fitness for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Shami will be
closely monitored during a few Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) T20 games.
Shami has
less than a week to show his fitness to the Indian selectors. Although he’s
back playing, he’s still being monitored by the BCCI’s medical team. Reports
suggest that he needs to lose some weight and improve his fitness to be
eligible for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.
A source
from the BCCI told The Times of India that Shami’s fitness is still a concern,
as he relies on the medical team after every bowling spell. The medical team
believes that as he plays more matches, Shami will lose weight, which will help
him build endurance. The first round of SMAT matches is being used as a fitness
test for him.
Shami’s
recovery and training are being managed by BCCI’s head of sports science, Nitin
Patel, and NCA trainer Nishant Bordoloi. Shami's recovery and training are
being overseen by Nitin Patel, the BCCI's head of sports science, and Nishant
Bordoloi, the NCA trainer.
Although
Shami isn't fully fit yet, the BCCI is being cautious and focusing on getting
him fully ready for the ICC Champions Trophy in February. If he passes the SMAT
fitness test, he may join the Indian team for training. However, the selectors
are hesitant to rush him back for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If everything
goes as planned, Shami could be available for the third Test, starting December
14.
In Shami’s
absence, India performed well in the first Test at Perth, with Jasprit Bumrah,
Mohammed Siraj, and debutant Harshit Rana leading the pace attack to help India
win by 295 runs.
