The Board of
Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented stricter rules to limit
family time for players during international tours. Under the new policy,
families will be allowed to accompany players for only 14 days on tours lasting
45 days or more, while shorter tours will permit family stays for just one
week.
Review
Triggered by Recent Test Losses
The decision
follows India’s disappointing Test series defeats to New Zealand and Australia
under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. According
to sources, it was Gambhir who suggested reducing family time to address issues
of indiscipline within the team.
During a
review meeting after the Border-Gavaskar series, Gambhir reportedly highlighted
concerns about indiscipline in the Indian dressing room. He proposed reverting
to pre-COVID rules, which restricted family stays during tours. The suggestion
was well-received by the players and management, according to anonymous
sources.
Focus on
Discipline and Accountability
Gambhir has
also recommended that the BCCI adopt a stricter stance, particularly with
junior players. Reports from the recent Australian tour revealed instances of
cricketers, both senior and junior, dining out frequently, with only one
official team dinner taking place between November 2024 and January 2025.
In addition,
a senior player at the review meeting suggested tying match fees to individual
performances. This proposal, discussed with BCCI President Roger Binny, stemmed
from concerns that some players were not fully committed to their
responsibilities with domestic and national teams.
Upcoming
Discussions
Amid ongoing
controversies, a meeting between Gautam Gambhir and a BCCI official is
reportedly scheduled to take place during the first T20I against England in
Kolkata. This meeting is expected to address further steps to enhance team
discipline and performance.
