The Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has firmly dismissed rumors about the
potential cancellation of the 97th Oscars, scheduled for March 2. These rumors
originated from a UK tabloid, The Sun, which claimed “secret contingency
plans” were in place to cancel the event due to the devastating wildfires in
Los Angeles. However, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that these
allegations are entirely false.
No Plans
to Cancel the Oscars
Senior
Academy sources clarified that there is no intention to call off the ceremony.
Contrary to claims, no advisory committee—featuring Hollywood stars like Tom
Hanks and Meryl Streep—exists to make such decisions. The only authoritative
body managing Oscars-related matters is the Academy’s 55-person board of
governors.
Although the
wildfires, which have tragically claimed 25 lives and destroyed numerous
homes—including those of celebrities Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton—have caused
some logistical changes, the event remains on track. Adjustments such as
extending the nominations voting period and rescheduling the Oscar Nominees
Luncheon have been made, but the ceremony itself will proceed as planned.
Solidarity
Amid Crisis
The Academy
has acknowledged the severity of the wildfire crisis and is exploring ways to
incorporate fire relief efforts into the ceremony. This gesture aims to reflect
compassion and solidarity with those affected. Insiders emphasize that the
Oscars symbolize resilience, noting that even the COVID-19 pandemic did not
suspend the event.
Changes
to Luxury Gift Bags
In light of
the devastation, the Academy is reportedly revisiting the contents of the
event’s famed $171,000 gift bags. Items like luxury vacations, including trips
to the Swiss Alps, and spa treatments are being reconsidered to ensure the tone
remains appropriate given the circumstances.
A Focus
on Dignity and Celebration
With
nominees set to be announced on January 23, the Academy is committed to
delivering a dignified ceremony. While honoring cinematic excellence, the event
will also acknowledge the hardships faced by those affected by the wildfires,
blending celebration with empathy.
