The last
rites of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will take place on Saturday
with full state honours. The Indian government has declared a seven-day
mourning period in honor of his memory.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several political leaders
from across the spectrum paid their respects to Dr. Singh at his residence on
Friday. PM Modi expressed his condolences to Singh's family and met with his
wife, Gursharan Kaur.
In a
heartfelt tribute, PM Modi called Dr. Singh one of India's most respected
leaders. He remembered their discussions during Modi's time as Gujarat's Chief
Minister, praising Singh’s wisdom and humility.
According to
Congress sources, Dr. Singh's last rites will take place on Saturday, after his
youngest daughter, a professor at Stanford Law School, arrives in India later
that evening.
Born in
Punjab in 1932, Dr. Manmohan Singh played a key role in India's economic
reforms as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. His reforms
helped liberalize the Indian economy and end the license-permit system.
As Prime
Minister, he introduced several landmark laws, including the Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Right to Education Act,
and the Food Security Act. Under his leadership, the Indo-US nuclear deal
marked a major shift in India’s global standing.
