Dr. Manmohan
Singh, former Prime Minister of India, passed away today at the age of 92 due
to age-related health issues. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS) in New Delhi announced his passing in an official statement.
AIIMS
announced with deep sadness the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh at the age of 92." "He became unconscious at home
on December 26, 2024." Resuscitation efforts were made immediately, and he
was brought to AIIMS at 8:06 PM. Despite all attempts to revive him, he was
declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Singh
served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 during two terms of the Congress-led
UPA government. Known for his simplicity and intelligence, he played a major
role in shaping India’s economy. He had been facing health issues for the past
few months.
He is
survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences on social media, saying,
"India has lost one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji.
From humble beginnings, he rose to become a renowned economist and served in
important government roles, including as Finance Minister. His contributions
left a lasting impact on India’s economy, and as Prime Minister, he dedicated
himself to improving the lives of the people.
PM Modi also
remembered their discussions when Singh was Prime Minister and he was the Chief
Minister of Gujarat. "He consistently displayed wisdom and humility in
every interaction," he said. "My deepest condolences are with his
family and all those who admired him during this difficult time. Om
Shanti."
Congress
leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rushed to the hospital after
hearing the news of his critical condition.
Dr. Singh
was the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, introduced during his time
as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. These reforms helped
India recover from a severe economic crisis and set the country on a path of
economic growth and liberalization that changed its future.
