Google Commits to Nuclear Energy, Building Seven Reactors by 2035 to Power Expanding AI Operations

In a groundbreaking move to support its rapidly growing artificial intelligence operations, Google has announced plans to build seven small nuclear reactors by 2035, a significant commitment to low-carbon energy. The tech giant is partnering with Kairos Power, a nuclear energy startup specializing in advanced, small-scale nuclear technology, marking a shift in how tech companies are addressing their substantial energy needs.

The deal, the first of its kind, aims to provide 500 megawatts of electricity to power Google’s data centers and AI systems—equivalent to the energy required for a midsize city. The first reactor is expected to be operational by 2030, with the remaining reactors to follow in 2035. This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to round-the-clock, carbon-free power to meet its expanding energy needs sustainably.

"Nuclear energy provides a clean, 24/7 power source capable of meeting electricity demands with carbon-free energy around the clock," Google shared in a blog post. "Working closely with supportive local communities to advance these energy sources will accelerate the global shift to decarbonized electricity grids."

Kairos Power’s reactors differ from traditional nuclear plants. They utilize a molten salt cooling system, operating at a lower pressure than conventional reactors. This technology is designed to provide a safer, more manageable energy solution and offers a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Kairos has already started on a demonstration reactor in Tennessee to test these technologies, which could provide a scalable, reliable model for the future of clean energy.

The project location(s) for the reactors are still under consideration, and while the partnership cost remains undisclosed, the announcement highlights the increasing intersection of tech and energy sectors. Google’s commitment to nuclear energy aligns with a larger trend, as other tech giants like Microsoft have also moved to secure sustainable power sources for their data centers. Microsoft recently announced a similar partnership with Constellation Energy to restart the undamaged reactor at Three Mile Island, aiming to meet growing energy demands.

The rise in AI and data center demands has placed unprecedented pressure on the U.S. power grid, with a projected peak demand increase of 38 gigawatts in the next decade—enough to power 12.7 million homes. Google’s nuclear initiative represents a proactive step toward mitigating the environmental impact of digital infrastructure, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
