Truck Driver’s Son Builds India’s First Reusable Hybrid Rocket

Anand Megalingam’s journey from academic failure to a pioneering force in India’s space industry is a story of grit, passion, and determination. Born into a modest family with a truck driver father and a homemaker mother, Anand faced many setbacks along the way. Yet, he persevered—and went on to achieve something truly remarkable. 

During his first semester as an electrical and electronics engineering student, Anand failed all his subjects, casting serious doubts about his future. However, a surprising twist came when his sports abilities earned him a spot at a private college to study Aeronautical Engineering. That opportunity changed his life forever. 

A Passion for Aeronautics 

Once immersed in aeronautics, Anand found his calling. He won competitions and awards, fueled by a growing passion for space technology. With the dream of creating something innovative, he founded Space Zone India, a venture focused on eco-friendly rocket technology, based out of Tamil Nadu. Not only did Anand aim to push technological boundaries, but he also opened doors for young students to explore the world of aeronautics through his startup.  

In a gesture of gratitude for his father's unwavering support, Anand made him a 50% stakeholder in the company. With backing from the Indian government, ISRO, and several corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Space Zone India grew rapidly, eventually achieving a valuation of ₹800 crore. 

 Making History with RHUMI-2024 

On August 24, 2024, Anand and his team made history by launching India’s first reusable hybrid rocket, RHUMI, from a mobile launch pad in the coastal village of Thiruvadanthai, Tamil Nadu. More than 5,000 students, government officials, and dignitaries gathered to witness the historic moment. 

RHUMI wasn’t just any rocket—it carried three CubeSat and 50 PICO satellites, designed to collect essential data on cosmic radiation, UV levels, air quality, and atmospheric conditions. This research will play a crucial role in addressing climate change, a cause Anand holds close to his heart. “Space technology has an important role in tackling environmental challenges,” Anand explained in an interview with Startup Pedia

Overcoming Challenges 

Building RHUMI was no easy feat. Anand's team faced numerous regulatory and technical hurdles early in the project, but every setback became a learning experience. With relentless effort, they fine-tuned the rocket’s design and spent six intense weeks completing the final assembly. The manufacturing of the mobile launch pad required an additional six months to complete.

As the launch date approached, the team received clearances from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Air Force, and the Airport Authority of India—overcoming the final regulatory hurdles. However, even at the moment of ignition, the team held their breath as the launch was delayed by four agonizing seconds. 

"Those four seconds felt like an eternity," Anand reflected. "In that brief pause, the efforts of an entire year, the hopes of my team, and the trust placed in us by the government raced through my mind." Moments later, RHUMI soared into the sky, marking a monumental breakthrough in India’s space exploration journey.“We made history,” Anand proudly announced.
