Virat Kohli
is set to make a much-anticipated return as the captain of Royal Challengers
Bangalore (RCB) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Kohli, who
previously captained RCB from 2013 to 2021, is one of the league’s
longest-serving captains, second only to Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma
in terms of matches played. This return to leadership will see Kohli replacing
Faf du Plessis, who, at 40, is being succeeded by Kohli to bring a younger
energy into the team’s leadership. RCB’s decision reflects their interest in
building a more dynamic team for the future as IPL franchises gear up to secure
their core players for the coming seasons.
Kohli’s
previous stint as RCB captain saw a mix of successes and challenges. Leading
the team in 143 matches, he guided RCB to 66 victories, with 70 losses, and 7
no-results, yielding a winning percentage of around 46%. Although RCB never
secured an IPL trophy under his leadership, Kohli’s captaincy had several high
points, including reaching the IPL final in 2016. That season marked a personal
achievement for Kohli as he scored an astounding 973 runs, setting a
single-season record that remains unbeaten. Despite his remarkable performance,
RCB fell short in the final, losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Kohli’s
captaincy style has been characterized by an aggressive approach and an
unwavering commitment to the game, making him a vital player and an influential
leader. Although he stepped down as captain in 2021 to focus on his batting,
his return indicates a renewed dedication to guide RCB toward their elusive
first IPL title. Under du Plessis’s leadership, RCB performed reasonably well,
finishing 4th, 6th, and 4th over the last three seasons. However, the team is
eager for a leader who can consistently elevate their performance and bring
them closer to championship contention.
As Kohli resumes his captaincy, expectations are high for a new era at RCB. His return symbolizes continuity and renewed hope for fans and teammates alike, with aspirations of finally lifting the IPL trophy. With his experience, strategic acumen, and exceptional batting prowess, Kohli’s leadership could be pivotal in shaping RCB’s journey in the upcoming seasons.
