Swiggy, a
leading food delivery and quick-commerce platform in India, announced on Monday
the expansion of its 10-minute food delivery service, Bolt, to over 400 cities
and towns nationwide. The Bengaluru-based company, which went public last
month, has partnered with more than 40,000 restaurants, including global chains
like KFC, McDonald's, and Starbucks, along with popular local eateries, to
offer this rapid delivery service.
The Bolt
service features items that require little to no preparation, and is available
for restaurants within a 2-kilometer radius of customers. This expansion could
help Swiggy regain some of the market share in food delivery that it has lost
to its main competitor, Zomato, in recent years.
Initially
launched in major cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi,
Mumbai, and Pune, Bolt has now expanded to smaller cities like Jaipur, Lucknow,
Ahmedabad, Roorkee, Guntur, and Shillong.
Swiggy
clarified that its delivery partners are unaware of which orders are
Bolt-specific and do not receive extra incentives for faster delivery. Instead,
speed is achieved through strategic partnerships with restaurants and the
limited 2-kilometer delivery radius.
This move by
Swiggy increases the competition in India’s rapidly growing quick-commerce
market, which has seen more than 100% growth in the past year. Zomato’s
Blinkit, Swiggy’s own Instamart, Nexus-backed Zepto, and Tata-owned BigBasket
are reshaping consumer shopping habits, driving demand for instant delivery
across an expanding range of products.
